When Justice David Opas left his family at the dinner table to answer the doorbell in June 1980, a gunshot echoed through his neighbourhood in Sydney's east.

So began a terrifying campaign of retaliation by Leonard John Warwick, a disgruntled litigant whose deep resentment for the newly-established Family Court spilled into the private lives of judges.

In 1984, Justice Richard Gee's Belrose home was bombed as he and his two children slept, but they managed to walk free from the debris. In July that year, Justice Watson saw "a bright flash" as a "deafening" bang rang through their Greenwich home after his wife, Pearl Watson, opened a door that detonated a bomb.

In July 1985, Warwick planted a bomb at a Jehovah's Witness hall in Casula, killing Mr Sykes and injuring many others.
