Mike Hewitt, CEO of nuclear power development company IP3, says there are “so many reasons” nuclear should be a key part of Australia’s energy mix.

“Not the least of which, we’re the only G20 nation not pursuing nuclear power or having nuclear power,” he said.

“They also have suffered from many of the energy poverty issues that have come about because of an over-dependence and over-commitment to renewable energy.”

Has Mike Hewitt mentioned the cost of building one of these plants, and the cost per megawatt to produce power? Besides we have the most efficient and cheapest source of nuclear power already. It's called the sun.

Of course you'd support that Sky..(Murdoch). ANYTHING to undermine the Labor government in this country! You are disgraceful!.

Australia is the worst place for nuclear reactors. They require massive amounts of water to cool them. And no bastard is going to have one on the coast where they are planning to retire to.

Australia needs nuclear power the majority of Australians want it but our politicians don’t have the balls to support nuclear power ⚛️

Australia can't afford it

Great when we have earthquakes!!!

And he isn't biased at all.

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO and a 5mm capsule of radioactive material is a major health hazard in WA where road's closed off ... so, get real, absolutely NO to nuclear.

No doubt he would volunteer to have the reactor in his suburb - perhaps over the road from his house?

I can’t imagine why a CEO of a nuclear power development company would have this opinion. Colour me shocked.

Didn’t see that coming 🤪

And one reason why it isn't - politics.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Where would we teach/train these workers, seeing as ; - Those Pesky Universities keep getting funding cuts. - Tertiary admission numbers reduced . - National Cirriculum changed bi-annually. - STEM funding is a joke. - CSIRO has been used as a political/Financial football.

I am in utter shock that this man said that

Of course he would, purely for monetary GREED. As is the case for every CEO. Who thrive upon not caring about our existance or our world

Well I guess he would

Yeah like having a missing piece of radioactive material getting lost on the road somewhere ?

Like a lot of things, I don’t think we’ve been told the truth about nuclear power. It might not be what we think it is.

And they all end in Money. No real concern about affordable energy for the people.

Find a private backer who will finance the construction, operation, and decommissioning costs. Find a private insurance company that will underwrite the risks. Do that then maybe we can start to talk about nuclear.

MurdochSewerageCo 🖕

Well he would say that, wouldn’t he🤯

So Rupert has shares in nuclear industry then? Maybe own a firm or two?

Old tech, slow tech, expensive tech, not happening

Captain obvious

1 for Mike is “we can make $ off of it.” Notwithstanding that renewables are cheaper.

Of course! What a joke quoting the “nuclear” bloke; so Murdoch!

So he can buy a 5th holiday home is my guess

Yea, the number one reason is, he will get a big pay rise.

One reason would be if there was a disaster around a power plant then we could all learn what a dumb idea it was.

Says a CEO of a business wanting to ..oh I dunno MAKE MONEY ! fucking useless with pushing an argument that 90% of Australians think there are cheaper / cleaner alternatives Flog that DEAD HORSE

And so many better reasons why nuclear is a shit idea.

Has Rio Tinto found that parcel of radiation they lost last week between *whothefuckknows outback Australia and Perth yet?

As long as it's thorium based nuclear reactors we should go ahead now full steam. Replace coal power stations with thorium reactor's. In 100 years we are likely to have viable fusion reactors so let's not wait.

ive been saying that for 10 yrs were getting the subs

The main reason most people are still anti nuclear is because of accidents at Chenoble and Fukashima and unanswered question of what to do with the radioactive waste to stop terrorists making dirty bombs. It isn't a problem with Thorium fueled, Liquid Salt, Nuclear Reactors .

Brewery boss says people should drink more beer.

Thorium fueled, Liquid Salt, Nuclear Reactors (aka LFTR) are cheaper to build than uranium fueled reactors because LFTR work at ambient air pressure, therefor they don't need a high pressure ferro concrete containment vessel or tall chimneys to vent away the steam.

Yes just ask WA ….. they may take a while to answer you cos they are looking for a lost radioactive capsule

There is no reason to have nuclear. Lol

Haha so why didn’t the LNP do it, fake news

Well blow me down with a feather a nuclear Development Company CEO supports nuclear

Which LiberalAus The_Nationals mate is set to make billions? Their backyard first

But we’ve misplaced a radioactive thimble , how will we cope with a whole power station🙄🙄🙄

Sky spews MurdochGutterMedia

Why? No need, we have coal.

Losing nuclear material on the side of the road is probably not helping this proposal my dude.

Money!

Renewables, to date, do not have the life span to make them truly beneficial to the environment, use a huge amount of current energy (coal) to make, and in fact use coal as an ingredient, and cannot to date, supply more than a few percent of current demand !! Open your eyes !!!

But not while the LNP were stalling for 9 years.

thorium could be running everything in australia,

of course he is going to say that

So let me get this right a CEO who represents a nuclear company says nuclear is a good option sounds independent

The poor old journalistic failures sure are backing a lot of losers under this current rabble Dutton calls an Opposition

Hear hear!

ust must have shares in uranium. It’s the only explanation.

I’m sure the CEO of a coal company would tell you why we need coal.

I can think of 2,keeping the lights on and economy moving

Nuclear should be our total base load power with the worlds largest nuclear power facility constructed in the cape and Darwin to supply asian nations with clean power. Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon's, Borneo, the list is endless.

And so many reasons why it shouldn't.

TooExpensive

Of course he thinks its a good idea. When the irrelevant LNP get back in they can bring it online. Can't see that happening for another three terms.

'So many reasons' can't name one

Still the most expensive mechanism possible to generate energy. Go back to sleep. That train left the station

Ah....self-interest perhaps?

Gee I thought he would have been dead against it.

.. the main one being his job! Sure lets talk about it rationally but not as a reason to delay readily available renewable sources.

...except cost

The key part being that mining billionaires can make billions out of digging up uranium, they're in no way entitled to, endangering everyone and palming off the cost of long term storage on the tax payer while they pocket. If we tax it like we tax gas, don't bother.

Is anyone else surprised to hear a “CEO of nuclear power development company” advocating for nuclear energy to be a big part of Australia’s energy mix? It’s a bit like the “gas lead recovery” from the pandemic.

No good ones then...

of course he would he will get a big pay bonus again wooff wooff

CEO of company selling something says people ought to buy something. Well, that's pretty clever of Sky to work that out. What next? Liberal politicians criticise Labor Governments? Antivaxxers ignore science? Employers want wages lowered? Employees want more? Doh! Sky. Doh!

No.

It is. On the side of the highway somewhere.🤦‍♂️

What a nothing article!

Well, he is being well paid to say that isn't he ? After all nuclear power is great.........until it is not. Just ask the people at Chernobyl and Fukushima. Good grief we can't even secure a piece of nuclear material less than the size of a 5 cent piece !

Hahahaha. Of course he does. The Springfield monorail episode comes to mind here.

The guy that makes a living off of Nuclear wants Nuclear in Australia? No shit!

Amazing. The CEO of a nuclear power development company says we should have nuclear power. Got nothing to do about pushing up the share price of the company he’s CEO of? Not a conflict of interest?

Why? Is this on Murdoch’s agenda

CEO🤣😂 Of course he would say that! ThisisNotJournalism

I power my home on enough panels to cover a van, with a wind turbine & a couple truck batteries. I have a fridge colder then any house one. I watch tv all day & use heaps of power & never pay a cent. Mathematics will tell you your model is unsustainable

Just another CEO that has no idea

Only cause you would dump the waste on the bush. City people can’t be trusted to do that stuff right

Gee, CEO of nuclear power company says nuclear power is a good idea - who would have thought. P Off.

SkyNews … pht!

Nuclear is expensive but not as expensive as not going nuclear.

Did you know that for every Nuclear reactor built in western country, it ended up costing at least TWICE what the public were told in initial media, and NEVER beat the cost per KW of Today Solar and Wind! UK has a $100+ Billion clean up bill for its Nuke plants. Skynews

Remind me again how Multi technology mix went for the NBN?

It's funny that the LNP and their business partners are pushing for nuclear. In WA miners have just lost a radioactive capsule. Imagine these people being in charge of a huge reactor.

Breaking - nuclear power plant company promotes its business. How insightful.

So many more reasons why it shouldn’t too.

😂 no.

Excellent! Next door to Mike's place seems the ideal location.

How many shares does Rupee have in nuclear companies?

So many reasons are you thinking of the people that’s going to lose their jobs and their families or are you thinking about your own pocket

Have they found the Radioactive Pellet they've ☢️ lost in Western Australia yet.Don't worry it SAFE it's Nuclear. 👍

And will they put the waste on a truck in WA? And lose it?

Sure he does. They are paying him

Any sane person who wants cheap, reliable energy, and who cares about climate, supports nuclear power. It's only the muppets in power and the 'green' activists who don't support it, because let's be real: for them it's not about reducing emissions but about transforming society.

You would expect a lobbyist to say that. Actually there is none.

'Nuclear bloke says Nuclear stuff'

Yes and the most important reason I suspect will be his commission…

Is there any surprise? What else would he say

Of course he would! he see's what current energy companies get to do in this country and he wants in.

Funny That! 😑

WA says absolutely NEVER!

Wow, a nuclear lobbyist wants, wait for it, nuclear power. Hand a Pulitzer NOW for the groundbreaking, incredible story.

The less nuclear anything we have in Australia the better. Nuclear subs are pretty much essential now day thanks to the threat Russia and China impose, but apart from military applications, all other forms should be kept out of the country

Maybe find the missing cell first. Why are you all of a sudden pro nuclear? You weren’t for it when Scummo was in….

Well, what an honest opinion from someone with nothing to gain and an impartial media outlet.

It's clean cheap energy, this is Australia, they won't do it. They will give us expensive unreliable energy.

all those reasons linked to his bank account

Is one of the reasons, he’ll make a shitload of money out of the taxpayers 🤡

‘A combination of failures:’ why 3.6m pounds of nuclear waste is buried on a popular California beach

Did Mike Hewitt CEO of nuclear power development company IP3 name the specific locations where he think nuclear plants should be established? Thought not.

The matter of the balance between capacity, reactor size and risk cannot be unexplained when any proposed nuclear power plant is considered. The point at which the plant is viable commercially, doesn’t favour optimal balance of the factors.

MurdochGutterMedia

I’m still confused why the right wing wants only nuclear yet it despises wind & solar is that because it’s associated with progressive policy, shouldn’t energy be affordable to all regardless of ideology. Identity politics has now become part of the energy debate too so crazy 🤦🏻‍♂️

Australia needs it but won’t get it.

The last of the nuclear plants in California is closing

What bullshit

And so many more reasons why it shouldn't be! Hewitt is just pushing a barrow to profit himself.

So why didn’t LNP push for it during their 9 years in government, but more importantly where are the multiple Sky News Australia articles pushing it for those 9 years

Chernobyl. Three mile island. Fukushima.

Mostly because it is centralised and private capital can rip more money out of the community

BREAKING NEWS

Probably the best reason is that he'd stand to make a lot of money out of it. Nuclear power is indeed very safe & clean, but it's also one of the most expensive way to generate power. Renewables, with batteries to store the excess power, are the way to go.

Investers need to put up the money, that would be held in trust by government, for decommissioning, nuclear waste storage and other contingencies before a single sod is turned.

Well that is surprising: a CEO of a nuclear power development company advocating for nuclear power

Have we found that little bit that apparently fell out of the back of a truck over in WA somewhere 😆 🤣 😂

Wow a CEO of Nuclear says we should have Nuclear. Quelle surprise!

Will it provide cheap energy for consumers; cheaper than now? Who will guarantee that. Who will: own the infrastructure govt/private, pay for it, fund the cost overrun, pay for any disaster cleanup? Whose problem is the waste? Ban current&former politician involvement.

Meanwhile in outback WA…. Looking for a radioactive tiny container that fell off a truck. Nuclear needs a good PR spin King/Queen to help out it’s image.
