Dr Anne Webster, from Mildura in country Victoria, her husband and her charity successfully sued Karen Brewer for defamation in the Federal Court over seven Facebook posts made in late April and early May.
Among other claims that were previously aired in court, Ms Brewer said the member for Mallee was “parachuted into parliament to protect a generation of paedophiles” and her charity was involved in sex trafficking. She has also been permanently restrained by the court from making further similar posts about the Websters.
A long line of Mildura community leaders provided glowing character references for Ms Webster, who was in 2019 awarded the Mildura Rural City Council Citizen of the Year, and Mr Webster, who has practised medicine in Mildura for 40 years. The most popular of Ms Brewer’s posts received 315 comments, was viewed 2400 times and shared 204 times.
