Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt is urging Australians to seek vaccinations against the flu as the government prepares to release 6 million free influenza shots from mid-month.
Figures released by the Immunisation Coalition show there were more than 10,000 cases of flu in March, compared to about 3000 over the same month last year.The virus has killed seven people in NSW this year.Experts say the increased numbers of cases are partly due to greater detection with new rapid tests, but are also a response to a milder 2018 season that left people with lower immunity.
Those eligible for a free shot include people over the age of 65, pregnant women and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders over 6 months old.
