among them – but plenty of others have simply treated the medium as an afterthought, with films shot in 2D being put through the 3D conversion process after the fact, to absolutely nobody's gain.

But cinema operators haven't given up entirely on trying to deliver the full multi-sensory experience. It's just that it's now more likely to involve offerings around the viewing as much as the movie itself. In 1928, the year after the talking picture arrived, Australians attended the cinema an average 29.7 times per year. By 1957, a year after television was first commercially broadcast in this country, we still averaged a respectable 12.9 visits per year, but five years later it was less than half that.

But the harsh reality for anyone involved in the cinema business is that attendances are in decline, both on a per capita basis and in absolute terms. On the other hand, each of those customers is now worth a whole lot more.
