It is hard not to notice that when the kinds of people on JobSeeker changed, so did the conditions. No one seriously believes allowing a newly unemployed pilot to live with dignity would be a disincentive to looking for work. | OPINION

Three years ago, a BBC interview went viral when the interviewee’s children ran enthusiastically into his office mid discussion. In 2020, a clip like that would no longer even raise an eyebrow. In 2020, our screens are windows and the curtains have been drawn back. Suddenly we have glimpses into each other’s homes and lives – noisy children, wayward pets, washing baskets and bookshelves all on display.

The Salvos have been in the business of helping people who have fallen on hard times for around 140 years in Australia. We’ve been advocating to government about the rate of the JobSeeker Payment for what feels like almost as long. The base rate of JobSeeker and Youth Allowance is so low that it acts as a barrier to getting a job. It is so low that it becomes, in effect, a poverty trap. Before COVID we worked with people who had less than $17 a day left after they had paid for housing.

I am not naturally a cynic but it is hard not to notice that when the kinds of people on JobSeeker changed, so did the conditions. These newly unemployed people could never be written off as “dole bludgers”. No one seriously believes allowing a newly unemployed pilot to live with dignity would be a disincentive to looking for work. These newly unemployed give us important glimpses into our society as a whole. They show us that unemployment is rarely a choice and can happen to almost anyone.

All governments need to work together to develop a plan to end homelessness. Making sure every person has a place to call home will be hard, but Australia has done hard things before and we can do this.

Oh, so *now* there are deserving unemployed.

Workers have no rights anymore. Employment security does not exist. Morrison has no compassion for those who cannot line his own pocket $

A lot of people unemployed or underemployed now. Hard to imagine how anyone could EVER vote in the future for a party that that does not support them RIGHT NOW in their moment of need.

This is bad but could have been saved to some degree if dan have not let hotels get out of hand a lot of business would still be hear if not for him

I would have hoped the salvos would also recognize & advocate for the hardships faced by those on the Disability Pension whose payments have not changed like those on Job Keeper.

It is time that our politicians put their obsession about each other asides. Morrison should start acting as a leader. It’s is to splash the cash to create manufacturing, helping to create glass houses to grow vegetables for the world, small businesses and create jobs, smart spla

When they stop the extra payments this whole charade falls over. For now the huge economic costs of lockdown are kept hidden. Won't last. KissMyArseDan sueDanAndrews

Labor could have win the 2019 election if they increased Newstart and the pension Gillard did major damage reducing Newstart for single parents. Added to the idea that they're all the same.

The federal government has delivered the newly unemployed poverty for Xmas Well done Morrison

Christa's gap year 'went down the drain' — this is how she spent 2020 insteadAll Year 12 students, except Victorians, have received their HSC results. But like so many things in 2020, the pandemic has disrupted well-laid plans and now students are contemplating their future. FirstWorldProblems Not surprising Victorians haven't received their HSC results given they aren't in NSW where HSC still exists. Good story but there is a weird, repeated paragraph.

2020 US Review: America hit by the virus, violent protests and political contentions | Sky News AustraliaThe United States has felt the twin-impacts of violent protests and the coronavirus pandemic during a chaotic year under the leadership of President Donald Trump.\n\nOver the course of the year, the president was impeached and then acquitted and the military and national guard were sent into cities to combat violence which erupted after the death of African American man George Floyd. \n\nJoe Biden became the front running Democrat figure in the lead up to the 2020 election in August despite routine gaffs on the campaign trail.\n\nTowards the end of the year, the supreme court nomination of Amy Coney Barrett became a key election issue, clearly dividing Democrats and Republicans, after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away.\n\nIn November the election was held and the blue wave predicted by election polls was once again proven false with the Democrats only just retaining the House of Representatives and failing to take the Senate.\n\nDespite dozens of legal cases launched by the president and his legal team alleging fraud in the swing states, the election result has stood firm and most of the cases thrown out.\n\nPresident-elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have assembled an administration of Obama era figures to lead the nation when they officially take over on January 20. \n Nope all the violent protests were fine to democrat areas, do your homework 93% of the protests were completely peaceful, you racist hacks. At what point did he lead? I don't recall seeing him display ANY leadership whatsoever.

Australia-China relationship worsened throughout 2020 | Sky News AustraliaAustralia’s relationship with China has suffered over the past year due to escalating trade-tensions.\n\nIn April, amid a nation-wide lockdown, Australia demanded an independent inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus.\n\nHowever, the Chinese government was incensed by the request and hit back with threats of a consumer boycott on Australian goods.\n\nWhen Australia refused to back down and continued its calls for a proper assessment into the origins of the pandemic, Beijing followed through with their threats, suspending beef abattoirs in May, and imposing hefty tariffs on Australian goods, including wine, lobster, barely and coal. \n\nThe fractured relationship was further demonstrated after the Chinese embassy in Canberra issued a dossier containing 14 grievances against the Australian government in November in a deliberate ploy to reverse key policies. \n\nToward the end of the year, Australia brought a trade dispute with China over tariffs placed on Australian barley to the World Trade Organisation. \n\nAustralian moves into 2021 no closer to rescuing its rocky relationship with China. \n Past year, eh? That was during Morrison's tenure as the laziest, most incompetent, most ignorant, most corrupt, most useless PM we've ever had. I wonder if the two things are connected somehow ... Suffered over the past year due to AUSTRALIA calling for an investigation/enquiry into the CHINA-VIRUS!. TELL IT AS IT IS SKY AUSTRALIA! Or is sugar-daddy Rupert lubed up for China as well? Guess China wants to control them .
