The Government's tiny backbench of three will have two new members in the House of Assembly, after the resignations of Adam Brooks and Rene Hidding.
Joan Rylah makes her return to politics for the seat of Braddon, while newcomer John Tucker will replace Mr Hidding.With two decades' political experience, in his most recent parliamentary days, Mr Hidding was effective at playing the role of laid-back guard dog in committees, quick to interject and act as a buffer between opposition interrogations and ministers when questions might be deemed tricky or out-of-line.
That was not Ms Rylah's style during her time in Parliament, and Tasmanians will soon see whether it is Mr Tucker's. Both are likely to have higher hopes though, and given the frequency of turnover in this Government there's no reason they shouldn't set their sights on more significant roles in the future.The candidate field for Nelson is already a cast of thousands because of the retirement of Jim Wilkinson, who will also need to be replaced as Legislative Council president come May.
