AFL: 360 co-host Mark Robinson believes the league should look into slowing the game down and reducing quarter lengths due to the growing injury toll across the AFL.

Despite multiple doses of AFL assistance, what is starting to feel like an age-old puzzle seems no closer to being pieced together.

A pre-season pumping of Collingwood birthed excitement about ‘Northball’ — a high-scoring, high-octane concept that injected a dangerous amount of hope in a starved fanbase. Charlie Comben has been an irrefutable bright spot in an otherwise grim defensive landscape at Arden Street, already equalling his most games in a season in his career by Round 10.

Travelling back in time to the late months of 2017, North Melbourne was just a few whiskers away from luring legendary Tiger Dustin Martin to Arden Street on a purported deal of $11,000,000 over seven years. However, the raised hopes of Roos supporters were cruelly shot down once Martin memorably announced to the AFL world he was staying at Punt Road.

They were provided an assistance package leading into last year’s trade period that included an end-of-first round selection in the 2023 national draft and a pair of end-of-first round selections at this November’s intake. Another similarity in list directives between the Kangaroos and Saints: they were both in serious pursuit of then-unsigned Collingwood superstar Jordan De Goey in 2018.

Zac Fisher and Dylan Stephens certainly haven’t set the world alight thus far, though it should be noted that Fisher’s distribution by foot against Essendon on Sunday was a positive. In positives, last year’s second overall draft choice Colby McKercher looks the absolute goods, while No.4 selection Zane Duursma has exhibited promising signs.

“No players are going to the bottom clubs — how do we fix that, though? You can’t really force a restraint of trade and stop players going to top clubs or leaving bottom clubs. Yes, Parker is a better player, and persuading the Sydney-based stalwart wouldn’t be anywhere near as easy. North Melbourne presently has 19 players coming out of contract this year, including restricted free agent Cam Zurhaar, while decisions will need to be made on Bailey Scott, Will Phillips and the like.
