Prizemoney for the Australian tennis summer has tipped above $100 million for the first time, with Australian Open players to share in a record $76.5 million.

The lure for players to travel Down Under has never been more stark. The Australian Open bounty has more than doubled in the past decade – up from $30 million in 2013.While this year’s singles champions will pocket cheques close to the $3 million mark, those individual earnings are well down on the more than $4 million given to the two champions in 2020.

Prizemoney increases for the Open are between 3 per cent and 4 per cent across the board. A player who exits the Australian Open in the first round will pocket $106,250. Not only are players who represent their country in the 18-nation United Cup – staged in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth with the finals stage held in the NSW capital – eligible to accrue valuable rankings points, they will share in a $23 million prize pool.

Tennis Australia and its flagship Australian Open event came under significant financial pressure during the past two COVID-impacted tournaments, copping a hit estimated at $140 million for staging the delayed 2021 tournament, incurring millions in hotel quarantine costs for players and support staff.

‘Good for tennis’: Nadal backs in Djokovic’s return for Australian OpenSpanish tennis star Rafael Nadal has welcomed his rival Novak Djokovic's return to Australia as 'good for tennis', arguing it's better for the fans that the 'best players' compete on court. 'Novak is here. Good for tennis, good probably for the fans. Best players on court, always better,' Mr Nadal said on Wednesday. The 22-time Grand Slam champion made the remarks in Sydney on the eve of the United Cup mixed team tournament. Mr Djokovic was deported in January 2022 after he was found not to have met the COVID-19 vaccination requirements of the time. The star will use the Adelaide International to prepare for his tenth Australia Open after he missed his chance at last year’s event. The Albanese Government confirmed last month Mr Djokovic would be granted entry for the 2023 Australian Open, which is scheduled to begin on January 16. Why should Novak return to Australia after the way he was treated last time? Just another instance where it all gets swept under the rug. Is Nadal shedding? Gives the cookers someone to support I guess
