For many, the port-side town is a name on the route map to holiday hotspots further down the coast, but its vibrant dining, drinking and art attractions are worthy staying awhile for.

Angry clouds and a spitting rain are framed in the windscreen as I make the hour-and-a-bit drive along the pulsing M1 southwest of Melbourne to Geelong.

The Geelong Gallery is at the heart of the city’s cultural rebirth and a must-visit destination for your weekend getaway.I’m kicking off my weekend at La Cantina, a restaurant opened last year at Common Ground Project, a not-for-profit community farm growing biodynamic produce on 1.6 hectares at Freshwater Creek, on the city’s southern outskirts.

He delivers this – and a meal to remember. The Spanish mackerel, brined, blowtorched and served with violet artichoke and poutargue , is sublime. The potato tortelli and baked tarragon cream with blackberries and cacao aren’t far behind. Sure to bring boatloads of customers to 1915 is The Spirit of Tasmania ferry service, which is moving from Melbourne to the Corio Quay, less than a kilometre away. “We could be the perfect boarding lounge,” says general manager Rob Macafee.
