A new VTOL aircraft called the Cyclone uses movable semicircular wings that can change their orientation depending on the phase of flight.
The field of aviation is constantly evolving, and one of the most interesting recent developments involves the revival of an unusual wing design known as the semicircular or channel wing. This concept was first explored in the early twentieth century by inventor Willard Ray Custer, who believed that shaping wings into curved channels could improve lift, especially at low speeds.
His idea involved using propellers to push air through these curved sections, allowing aircraft to generate lift more efficiently even without high forward velocity. Although early trials showed that the design had potential, the technology available at the time was not advanced enough to make it practical for widespread use.In recent years, however, modern engineering has made it possible to revisit and refine this concept. A new VTOL aircraft called the Cyclone, developed by HopFlyt, demonstrates how far the idea has come. This aircraft uses movable semicircular wings that can change their orientation depending on the phase of flight.Wings are positioned to maximize upward liftDuring takeoff, the wings are positioned to maximize upward lift, enabling the aircraft to rise vertically or within a very short distance. As it transitions into forward motion, the wings rotate into a more streamlined position, improving efficiency and stability. These adjustable wings can also assist in slowing the aircraft down when necessary, adding another layer of control.“It’s kind of a funny thing, but I’ve heard people say that by the 1960s in aviation people had already thought of everything,” HopFlyt’s Chief Engineer Neil Winston told New Atlas. “But the technology wasn’t quite there to make everything work. There were variable takeoff and landing aircraft back then, but there weren’t the digital control systems. There were ideas for air taxis, but the electric motors and the types of propulsion that you needed didn’t exist back then.”Design offers several notable advantages over conventional VTOLThe design offers several notable advantages over more conventional VTOL systems. One of its key strengths is improved energy efficiency, particularly during takeoff and ascent, where it requires significantly less power. The aircraft also uses a combination of electric and fuel-based propulsion, allowing it to travel long distances while maintaining flexibility in operation. With the ability to cover hundreds of miles and carry substantial cargo, it is well suited for practical applications. Additionally, the system is designed to produce much lower emissions, making it a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional aircraft. This type of aircraft could prove especially valuable in situations where access is difficult, such as remote regions, offshore platforms, or emergency scenarios. Its ability to take off and land vertically without the need for a runway makes it highly versatile for logistics and rapid-response operations. As development continues, there is also potential for scaling this technology to larger aircraft, possibly including passenger transport in the future.Overall, the return of the channel-wing concept highlights how innovative ideas from the past can gain new life when combined with modern advancements. By integrating improved materials, smarter systems, and efficient propulsion methods, engineers are transforming an old experimental design into a promising solution for the future of aviation.
