Atalanta's Serie A title aspirations are facing a setback after a 1-1 draw with Torino, with goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic once again proving crucial in denying the home side a victory. Meanwhile, Verona secures a vital win against Monza, while Udinese overcomes a scare to defeat Venezia.
Atalanta 's hopes of securing the Serie A title may be fading, and goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic of Torino could be seen as a key reason. The Serbian international prevented a penalty shot from Atalanta for the second time this season, helping his team earn a 1-1 draw on a rainy night in Bergamo. Atalanta remains in third place, three points behind Inter Milan, who will face AC Milan in the derby on Sunday.
They also trail league leaders Napoli by six points, with Napoli visiting Roma on Sunday. Berat Djimsiti scored his first goal in almost three years, heading Atalanta into the lead on 35 minutes. However, Guillermo Maripán equalized for Torino just five minutes later. The Chilean captain's goal marked his first in Serie A. Atalanta had the chance to go 2-1 ahead with 16 minutes remaining after a penalty was awarded when Torino midfielder Adrien Tameze brought down Matteo Retegui by pulling his shirt. But Milinkovic-Savic stretched fully and deflected Retegui's shot with his fingertips. The Torino goalkeeper celebrated but was cautioned for mocking the Atalanta supporters, who retaliated by throwing objects at his goal. This was the third penalty Milinkovic-Savic has saved this season. One was against Bologna in December, and the other was against Atalanta in August, a match Torino won 2-1.In another match, a comical own goal allowed Hellas Verona to secure a crucial 1-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Monza. Suat Serdar appeared to pose little threat in the 13th minute when he passed the ball from the right. Monza defender Stefan Leković had ample space and time to control or clear the ball, but instead, he sent it into his own empty net. Verona's first victory in 2023 moved the club three points above the relegation zone. Monza was eight points adrift of safety. One of Monza's standout players, Daniel Maldini, completed his move to Atalanta shortly before the match began.Udinese survived a scare after squandering a two-goal lead before Iker Bravo scored the winning goal six minutes from time to snatch a 3-2 victory over Venezia and end a five-game winless streak. Venezia is five points away from escaping the relegation zone
