As the heroes of World War II made their way to France in commemoration of D-Day, one of those war veterans died as he made his way to Europe.
Robert Persichitti, of Rochester, New York, a Navy veteran who served in the Pacific, died at a German hospital after suffering a medical emergency on a boat bound for France, according to multiple reports.
reports Persichitti was traveling with a companion when the medical emergency occurred. Richard Stewart, president of the Honor Flight Rochester, a veterans' organization, told the New York Times Persichitti's death was not expected. “He died peacefully, and he did not die alone,” Stewart told the outlet. In 2022, Persichitti discussed his service with WDSU during a Veterans Day luncheon in New Orleans.
