Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds' holiday comedy Spirited features an Elf Easter egg, though it may not be as nostalgic as fans want.
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Spirited. Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds' new Christmas movie, Spirited, features an Elf Easter egg. Co-directed by Sean Anders and John Morris, the holiday musical-comedy recently hit theaters and is set to be available to stream November 18 on Apple TV+.
Based on Charles Dickens classic novella A Christmas Carol, Spirited stars Reynolds as a modern-day Scrooge, named Clint Briggs, and Ferrell as The Ghost of Christmas Present, simply named Present, who hopes to redeem Clint's bad behavior. The pair is joined alongside Octavia Spencer, Patrick Page, Sunita Mani as Past and Tracy Morgan as the voice of Yet-To-Come. However, A Christmas Carol isn't the only holiday film to be referenced in Spirited. SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Entertainment Weekly reveals Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds' Spirited features an Elf Easter egg. The iconic green suit Ferrell wore as Buddy in the beloved 2003 movie makes an appearance in Spirited, spotted when Present , returns to his 'mortal' life. Once Clint , tricks Present into examining his life, he spirals into an early retirement and attends a real-life holiday party. Not used to being seen or heard, he crashes into a pillar. Then, Present is helped by a party-goer, who wears an exact replica of Buddy the Elf's famed green costume. How Spirited Riffs On Christmas Classics Present, out of sorts, then goes on to make fun of the famed Elf outfit, telling the party-goer, "you look stupid." Clint, helping Present gather himself, agrees with him and repeats, "he looks stupid" as they walk away. The pair's response could not be further from the cheerful, happy-go-lucky tone Buddy usually brought to others in Elf, which is done on purpose, as Spirited aims to shake up both its source material, and the holiday classic genre as a whole. While viewers might expect a more nostalgic reunion between Ferrell and the Buddy lookalike, Spirited spoofs the moment. Spirited riffs not only Elf, but primarily A Christmas Carol, which, throughout history, has been depicted countless times in various film and television adaptions. However, while most versions include the same players of a selfish, ill-tempered Scrooge, well-meaning ghosts, and a family in need, Spirited turns the attention away from the down-and-out grump, and sees the spirits in the spotlight. Though still featuring the spirits themselves, with everyone from genre vet Ferrell to recent hit actor, Save Yourselves!'s Sunita Mani, the decision to actually develop them into their own characters feels like the most unique take on them since the Bill Murray-led Scrooged. With the film also holding a major reveal regarding Ferrell's Present and his past, Spirited looks to be attempting to bring a very fresh take to Dickens' A Christmas Carol, even as it plays out a number of the same plot points. Though critics have been a little mixed on Reynolds and Ferrell's holiday movie pairing, it will be interesting to see if it lives up to audiences' expectations for a hilarious buddy comedy between the two, as well as Ferrell's first major genre return since Elf. Audiences can find out for themselves with Spirited now in theaters and available to stream on Apple TV+ on November 18.
