The risk of falling victim to a cyberattack is ever-present. Incidents can range from data breaches and ransomware attacks to phishing scams and malware infections. Knowing how to respond swiftly and effectively to minimize damage and protect sensitive information is essential if a cyber incident occurs.

Moreover, businesses might hide a cyber incident without even knowing about it. The problem might be tied to internal communication and low trust. The results ofshowed that after making an email mistake resulting in data loss, 21% of employees in the U.K. and U.S. didn't inform their IT team about it. This might be because they were afraid of losing their jobs as, according to the same study, one in four respondents said they lost their jobs after this type of incident.

First, it's crucial to have the right mindset. Cyber incidents must be treated no differently than any other kind of crime. Allowing a cyber incident to slip away without an investigation or not sharing information raises the risk for other businesses to get burned. Especially when it comes to ransomware attacks, complying with criminals and paying money fuels them to keep attacking other enterprises.

Second, when it comes to internal communication, businesses should first inform employees about a safe sharing environment and build policies in favor of employees to encourage openness. From my experience, people management delivers its own set of communicational challenges. Years of doing that proved one thing—open communication always wins and makes processes easier. Without being open to your team, it would be hard to expect the same from them.

The right internal culture and open external communication can help ensure a safer environment for businesses globally. Transparency and cooperation with relevant authorities, customers and stakeholders are critical in mitigating the impact of a breach and rebuilding trust.
