An annular solar eclipse was visible across much of the United States on Saturday
The eclipse, which occurs as the moon is near its furthest point from Earth, creates the"ring of fire" effect with the sun peeking around the moon's edges.During a"Ring of Fire" annular eclipse, the moon is the point in its orbit farthest from Earth. Because the moon doesn't fully encompass the sun, it looks as though there's a"ring of fire" in the sky.
The Houston area was expected to get between 80 and 85 percent viewing coverage. The video above is from Corpus Christi which was at 100 percent coverage. Check out the slideshows below. We've compiled some of your photos and pictures from around the state. What is a 'Ring of Fire' annular solar eclipse?
During a"Ring of Fire" annular eclipse, the moon is at its orbit farthest from Earth. Because it’s farther than it is during a total solar eclipse, it doesn’t cover the entire sun, leaving what appears to be a ring of the sun visible for those who are in the path. That's where the"Ring of Fire" eclipse got its name.A total solar eclipse will happen on April 8, 2024, and will also travel over several states, including Texas.
