Parts of the U.S. Gulf coast and interior sections of the Southeast could get pounded with heavy rain, flash flooding and destructive winds, forecasters say.
Forecasters say Tropical Storm Helene will quickly intensify into a hurricane, posing a threat of drenching rain, high storm surge and destructive winds in Florida and other parts of the Gulf Coast region., and it’s expected to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane before it takes aim at Florida and Georgia in the next two days.

Forecasters say Tropical Storm Helene will likely intensify into a strong hurricane and dump 4 to 8 inches of rain across parts of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee, with some isolated areas getting drenched with as much as 10 inches of rain.The National Weather Service’s New Jersey office said it’s possible a large ridge of high pressure circulating north of the Garden State could suppress the moisture to our south.
As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, the center of Tropical Storm Helene was located about 180 miles east-southeast of Cozumel, Mexico and about 170 miles south-southeast of the western tip of Cuba.
