German Defense Contractor TKMS Predicts Market Tripling By End of Decade

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), a leading German warship builder, is witnessing a surge in market demand due to rising global defense spending. CEO Oliver Burkhard expects the company's market size to triple by the end of the decade, driven by momentum in areas like electronics, drones, surface vessels, and submarines.

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems ( TKMS ), the warship division of German industrial conglomerate ThyssenKrupp, anticipates a tripling of its market size by the end of the decade, fueled by increased global defense spending. CEO Oliver Burkhard stated this projection on the sidelines of the Singapore Defense Technology Summit, highlighting the expansion of the market in areas like electronics, drones, surface vessels, and submarines.

Burkhard's optimism stems from proposed reforms to Germany's 'debt brake,' a fiscal rule that limits government borrowing. The proposed changes would exempt defense and security expenditures above a certain threshold from this constraint. Burkhard sees the move as a signal showing that there are 'more or less no limits' when it comes to defense budgets, characterizing it as a shift from traditionally cautious German economic policy. He emphasized that the 'whatever it takes' approach signals a significant departure from the meticulous data-driven decision-making process typically employed in Germany. This increased funding, Burkhard believes, will accelerate defense projects and lead to greater procurement from German industry. TKMS, which manufactures naval vessels and submarines, is set to benefit from this surge. While Burkhard acknowledges the challenges of scaling production to meet the rising demand, he sees opportunities for further growth through partnerships, citing their collaboration with India's Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders to design and engineer six submarines. TKMS is also undergoing a process to be spun off from ThyssenKrupp and listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, a move expected to further boost its growth and visibility
