Mike Spies writes about John Lott, a highly influential pro-gun researcher and an N.R.A. favorite, whose methods and findings have been repeatedly debunked.
This story was published in partnership with The Trace, a nonprofit news organization covering guns in America. In recent years, gun companies have aggressively marketed semi-automatic AR-style rifles to civilians.
