Testimony revealed Nelson set fire to his mother’s bed at 3 years old, and as an adult was convicted of aggravated assault, theft and burglary. He was on probation for aggravated assault and had been released from an anger management program days before Dobson’s death. Nelson, who was shackled at the hands and feet in addition to a stun cuff ankle bracelet, took the witness stand. He testified that heAfter the murder, Nelson was accused of killing a mentally ill inmate while in Tarrant County jail.
