The first entry in James Gunn’s rebooted DCU, Superman: Legacy, has been given an official release date and a brief plot summary. After Discovery Inc. merged with WarnerMedia to become Warner Bros. Discovery, CEO David Zaslav tapped Gunn and his producing partner Peter Safran to run the newly created DC Studios. Gunn and Safran previously collaborated with DC on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
There was a rumor that Clark Kent will have a son in Superman: Legacy, possibly due to the fact that the word “legacy” is in the title, suggesting it revolves around Clark passing on the Superman mantle. However, Gunn has debunked this rumor. In response to a fan on Twitter who said there was no point in firing Cavill from the role of Superman if the new incarnation of the character is old enough to be a father, Gunn tweeted, “I never said Clark is going to have a child.
Superman: Legacy Release Date As of yet, Superman: Legacy is the only movie in the DCU that has an announced release date. Superman: Legacy will come out July 11, 2025. Summer is a prime window for big-budget tentpoles and 2025 gives Gunn plenty of time to get the script right before shooting. Horror sequels M3GAN 2.0 and A Quiet Place Part III are also dated for 2025, but they should be no match for the Man of Steel.
Instead, the conflict of Superman: Legacy will see Superman figuring out his place in a world that’s not his own. Safran said that Superman’s character arc in the new movie “focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.” Superman: Legacy will revolve around the traditional ideals that define the character, but it will also put a modern spin on how those ideals are perceived: “He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way.
