A legacy of evil.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT One of the most destructive creations in Star Trek, Wrath of Khan’s Genesis Device began as a tool for creating life, before being turned into a deadly weapon. In addition to driving the plots of Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan and its sequel, The Search For Spock, the Genesis device's horrifying legacy has been explored in other Trek media, including Marvel's 1998’s Star Trek: The Next Generation Special: Riker.
Star Trek: The Next Generation Special: Riker – written by Dan Abnett and Ian Edington and drawn by Andrew Currie – serves as both a continuation of The Next Generation and a direct sequel to Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, picking up on threads from both the series and the film, most notably the Genesis Device.
The Genesis Device Betrays Its Name The Genesis Device ranks alongside the Planet Killer and the Slaver’s Stasis Box as one of the most devastating weapons in the Star Trek universe. Designed to be set off on a lifeless world in order to terraform it, detonating the Device on world where life already exists would result in that life being killed as it reorganized itself at the subatomic level.
Genesis Lives On Hundreds of Years Later As it turns out, the Maquis have acquired the stolen plans for the Genesis Device, and are willing to turn it over to the Klingons. While the Device falling into the wrong hands is avoided in “Enemy of My Enemy,” the issue serves reminds readers of the danger posed by Genesis. What began as a way to rapidly terraform a planet ultimately became perhaps the most destructive force created by Federation science.
Of course, the Genesis device may never have worked even as planned. As shown in The Search for Spock, David Marcus, one of the Device’s creators, used protomatter as fuel; an unstable transformation resulted, leading to its destruction. The Device's potential misuse has been depicted in subsequent Trek media, such as the Genesis Wave book trilogy.
