Solid Waste Services said Wednesday that it hopes to help mitigate risks from lithium batteries by getting more residents to dispose of them at HHW facilities.

Household Hazardous Waste facilities will accept up to 40 lbs. of lithium batteries per residential address daily at no cost to residentsANCHORAGE, Alaska - A renewed push for proper disposal of lithium batteries is being implemented by the Municipality of Anchorage after a fire sparked at the Anchorage Regional Landfill in late 2020 and was blamed on a lithium battery.

“We have fires that happen in the back of collections trucks sometimes. We have also seen small lithium watch batteries that spontaneously explode like bad popcorn. We don’t want that anymore; we just want people to know that there’s a specific way to handle those things.” Disposal steps for lithium batteries in particular include carefully removing batteries from devices, without puncturing or crushing the batteries; taping terminals securely, to help make sure terminals don’t make contact with one another; and separating the batteries from regular trash, instead bringing them to the hazardous waste locations.

Hazardous waste, including lithium batteries, can be disposed of at the Central Transfer Station in Anchorage, located at 1208 E. 56th Avenue, or at the Anchorage Regional Landfill, located at 15500 Eagle River Loop Road.
