A surge in toxic customers and poor behavior has prompted many restaurants to rethink the adage that the customer is always right

Chris Sirianni typed four words in capital letters, hit print and taped the message to the front door of his restaurant. The printout said simply: “BE KIND OR LEAVE.”

In the weeks since Mr. Sirianni put his sign at the front of the Brewerie at Union Station in Erie, Pa., as well as on Facebook, customers have acted better. While it didn’t eliminate problem customers entirely, it has curbed what had been a mounting display of bad behavior, he says.

Way people talk to saving staff is shocking! Been in industry 28 years and it gets worse every year.

This story has already been reported WSJ, find a new topic.

People for you.

Customer is “right” as long as customer doesn’t act like jackass. Just being the customer doesn’t give someone the right to misbehave and treat people (servers, vendors, etc) with disrespect.

Alas we live in an era where some ape like thugs believe behaving with manners and addressing conflict like proper adults is being 'Politically Correct' and its more effective to get in someone's face - lie, insult and threaten them - to get their way. Just like in 3rd grade.

Is there still a shortage of workers? That's why they have to deal with their tantrums at work ? Is that what you mean ?

'The customer is always right' doesn't mean the customer is infallible. It means that you should sell what customers want. It doesn't mean the customer is some kind of god.

They are not. But restaurants also better start thinking about paying their employees well without the usual cries of woe. 20% of the bill customers pay is not food, and the tipping entitlement culture has gone out of hand- tipping for food to go?

Bad behavior has been rewarded for too long. The public act like entitled 2 year old's. No one should have to deal with adult temper tantrums. This might be an upside to the pandemic.

Customers are always wrongs

The customer is usually an arse.

Too many deplorable Americans. Our citizens in any service industry deserve better.

Do you think maybe the entitled poor service could be the issue?

Hot take: they are not always right.

Most restaurants are terribly overpriced.

Some ppl are just noticing the effects of staffing shortages and reduced quality.

And about time

FUCK YOUR VAX PASSPORTS

thanks

Customers also need to remember the adage-“Never argue with the people who handle your food”

About time. Stop pandering to the moaning, miserable perma-unhappy customers

ill cook at home

Poor service from Restaurant’s is the main cause of toxic customers. Not the other way round. Poor behavior from customers is a universal thing. It is how you handle them that makes you a success.

My very first boss (owner of the business) told me the customer wasn’t always right and if we practiced the belief that they were that he’d be out of business.

Good! Customers are assholes. If they are being assholes you should be an asshole back to them. Refuse service to them if need be

Narrative has only changed now that workers are impossible to come by, and businesses can’t afford to lose any. Once the job market becomes saturated again with wokers they will become expendable again and the narrative will change back.

Had a lady tell me to watch my attitude when I asked why she didn't send her food back instead of complaining to the host and dragging me out of the kitchen after the fact. It was interesting watching her grump her way out of my Cafe after I told her to get lost lol

So many people are out of control and full of hate. Following Nancy Pelosi’s example.

This adage frequently means the contrary.

'The Customer is Always Right' has always been a way for managers to demean staff.

chansmith13 you need to behave

Airlines too

Pilots have to remind air traffic controllers that they’re “down there” because we’re “up here.” Not the other way around. Customers can always vote with their feet.

Lools like a TheBabylonBee title

Finallly

The 'Fox News Effect.' Propaganda-induced delusions of oppression and victimization combined with encouraged modeled behavior of an emotionally selfish, unstable adolescent.

If restaurants don’t start throwing these people out and banning them, they will lose everyone else. The choice is really quite simple. I won’t tolerate any restaurant who tolerates them.

People being rude and aggressive is glorified on social media

Good on the service providers for pushing back. Bad behavior shouldn’t be encouraged or condoned on any level.

The customer is infrequently right

Is it a surge in bad behavior, or a surge in hiring snowflake millennial servers? I’ve noticed an equally gross surge in cranky, entitled food service workers who think handing me a wrapped tube from a sandwich assembly line deserves a 20% tip.

It might be a good idea to monitor those whose articles are published in affiliation with WSJ. Dan Pisenti’s article here borders the realm of Qanon rubbish…
