Niles West High School alum Rashard Mendenhall, who played football for the Pittsburgh Steelers in two Super Bowls, visited the Skokie school, which retired his jersey number, 5, to honor him.

Niles West High School alum Rashard Mendenhall, who got his start playing football there and later played for an NFL team in two Super Bowls, visited the school Friday as they retired his jersey number. He greeted students with a fist bump.

“If you don’t like being uncomfortable, find something else to do,” he said. “Your parents won’t always be there to put their arms around you to bail you out.” had inducted him into their Hall of Fame with on-field ceremonies on Sept. 17. And hours after the ceremony in the gym, Niles West played crosstown arch-rival Niles North, with Mendenhall being honored again.

“They loved it,” said Krilich, who was along for the ride. “It was awesome. We were all very grateful. For some it was their first time on a college campus. And they got some U of I swag.”Mendenhall said he’ll have further contributions divided between athletics and academics as he builds up Nappy Rose Productions, his West Coast-based production company. Krilich said she’d appreciate Mendenhall’s counsel to students and faculty.
