A new ultra-fast 3D tracking method using single-pixel imaging promises to revolutionize autonomous driving and surveillance.

Researchers developed a new 3D method that can be used to track fast-moving objects at unprecedented high speeds. The optical setup for their experiments is shown. The new tracking approach is real-time and leverages single-pixel imaging technology. The team believes it could revolutionize various fields, including autonomous driving, industrial inspection, and security surveillance systems.

“Our approach does not require reconstructing the object’s image to calculate its position, which significantly reduces data storage and computational costs,” Geng explained. The team validated their method through both simulations and real-world experiments. Their experimental setup included a 532 nm laser for active illumination, a digital micromirror device with a 20kHz modulation rate to create light patterns, and two single-pixel detectors to collect light signals.
