After a series of contentious appearances by educators and educational advocates before the Texas State Board of Education, that conservative body voted to allow the creation of a Mexican American Studies high school elective course. That was in 2014. The board was increasingly under pressure then. Advocates were steadfast. Students themselves grew support for MAS in a state where more than half of students in Texas schools are Mexican American .

It recognized the absence of Mexican Americans and their histories in Texas courses and textbooks. It also recognized that children are better served academically by learning about their own histories, not just those of others. Studies prove as much.

She says Mexican American Studies is growing in places you’d expect and others you might not. “Interestingly, the Dallas region has the highest enrollment of students taking MAS courses at the high school level,” almost 4,000 at last count, she said.
