'I fear that AI is eventually going to weed out background actors. They won't have any use for us anymore.' - WandaVision background actor Alexandria Rubalcaba 🎬
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Marvel Cinematic Universe AI cast scan reports are incredibly worrying for the future of the franchise. Since the debut of the MCU's first movie, 2008's Iron Man, Marvel Studios has grown its shared universe exponentially. According to MovieWeb, the MCU is the highest-grossing movie franchise of all time by a wide margin. As of July, Marvel Studios' theatrical releases combined for a total amount of $29.
With such a well-established universe that is in no way in need of money, Marvel Studios should not have to resort to some of the exploitative means that come from the use of AI to substitute the work of actors and writers.
Marvel's AI Cast Scan Reports Raise Several Concerns Speaking to NPR, WandaVision background actor Alexandria Rubalcaba revealed that the Disney+ Marvel series scanned dozens of extras without telling them what their digitalized versions would be used for. Rubalcaba explained her concerns, saying, "What if I don't want to be on MarioVision, or SarahVision? I fear that AI is eventually going to weed out background actors. They won't have any use for us anymore.
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes aim to regulate the future of AI in Hollywood productions. Both strikes started after the major studios failed to meet seemingly simple demands such as not allowing writers to be substituted for AI tools or have them rewrite initial drafts made up by AI, as well as actors having rights to the use of their likeness across any projects.
Secret Invasion's AI Controversy Shows The MCU Needs To Avoid AI While the WandaVision background actor scan raises concerns, it is not the only aspect of the use of AI that Marvel should reconsider, as the recent choice to make Secret Invasion's AI opening credits backfired. Artists, fans, journalists, and many others raised some valid concerns about the series' decision to use AI to come up with its opening credits.
