Lithium battery fire in Brooklyn injures 5, FDNY says

A lithium-ion battery sparked a fire that injured five people in Brooklyn early Tuesday, according to the fire department.

Firefighters were called to a seven-story residential building on Menahan Street near Central Avenue and Wilson Avenue in Bushwick at 4:48 a.m. The blaze was already in progress on the second floor. According to the FDNY, 60 fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene, and were able to bring the situation under control by 5:28 a.m.

Three people were transported to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, and another two were transported to New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.FDNY officials say, as of Monday, there have been 214 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, resulting in 116 injuries and 14 fatalities.Brittany Kriegstein covers all breaking news around New York City, with a focus on crime and gun violence.
