No Padres outfielder has started in the All-Star game since Tony Gwynn in 1998; just eight MLB players have ever done what Jurickson Profar has accomplished, being named a starter for his All-Star …

The Padres Fernando Tatis Jr., right, celebrates with Jurickson Profar after hitting a home run against the Brewers on June 20. Jurickson Profar, considered the No.1 prospect in baseball when he made his major league debut in 2012 for the Rangers, is an All-Star for the first time.

“It’s very cool,” he said after several moments of smiling and shaking his head. “I don’t know what to say.” Luis Arraez finished second to the Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte, who will be the NL’s starting second baseman. Manny Machado was one of two finalists at third base and lost out to the Phillies’ Alec Bohm.

There have only ever been 11 Padres outfielders to be named an All-Star, and Profar will join Gwynn and Dave Winfield as the only Padres to start the game in the outfield. Gwynn did so nine times from 1984 to ‘98 . Winfield was a four-time All-Star with the Padres and started in center field in 1979.He is just the ninth player to have made his major league debut after 1933 and spent 11 seasons in the majors before being named a starter in their first All-Star game.
