Jurassic Park is one of the most famous disaster movies of all time, but a real-life disaster had a big impact both behind-the-scenes and on camera.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The first Jurassic Park movie kicked off a trilogy that would become a franchise, and the film’s biggest danger was actually a real-life problem as well. Jurassic Park was expected to become a big movie before it was even truly Jurassic Park, with director Steven Spielberg acquiring the rights to Michael Crichton’s novel before its 1990 publication date.
Jurassic Park eventually became a franchise that’s spanned almost 30 years with the release of the sixth film, Jurassic World Dominion, in 2022. However, it’s the original 1993 movie that stands out among the rest. Jurassic Park tells the story of a fictional theme park of the same name where an industrialist cloned dinosaurs to make them an attraction on the fictional tropical Isla Nublar.
The Jurassic Park Hurricane Was Actually Real John Hammond’s creation of Jurassic Park was flawed from the start and the dangers of it are what bring Ian Malcolm , Alan Grant , and Ellie Sattler to Isla Nublar. In the world of Jurassic Park, the remote island is about 120 miles west of Costa Rica, but the film was actually shot on the Hawaiian island of Kaua’i, where Spielberg was comfortable having previously filmed Raiders of The Lost Ark there.
At the time of the hurricane, Jurassic Park was in the final days of filming, and Spielberg had been completely unaware of the impending doom. This created an odd form of life imitating art and some real-life footage of the hurricane was even used in the movie for the waves caused by the tropical storm, which trapped the main characters on Isla Nubar with the now free-roaming dinosaurs.
The Hurricane Caused Major Problems For The Movie Despite being able to get additional footage to show the seriousness of the storm in Jurassic Park, Hurricane Iniki caused some pretty major problems for the film. Perhaps most notably, many sets were destroyed by the hurricane, including the one that led to the Power Shed. This meant that the long dramatic death scene planned for Ray Arnold was scrapped, and the character died off-screen instead in a somewhat underwhelming change.
