Coroner Gavin Thursdon performed the autopsy on Garland and came to the conclusion rather definitely that "She took more Seconal than her body could tolerate...there is absolutely no evidence this was intentional". The particular medication that Garland had taken, Seconal, was a common sleep aid at the time and there was evidence that the singer and actor had been using the drug in large doses for quite some time.
Garland was fired from the production of Annie Get Your Gun in 1949, and she missed out on playing the starring role in the hit Broadway movie adaptation because of her alleged belligerent behavior on set that has been linked to her substance abuse . That trend would continue through several other turbulent productions until she was eventually dismissed from her contract with MGM . This was in large part due to her addictions, and it derailed her career for quite some time.
