'Then the crowd went mental...'

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT John Wick director Chad Stahelski recalls the first audience reactions to the movie after a rough test screening. Released in 2014, the first John Wick film introduced Keanu Reeves as the titular hitman who comes out of retirement to seek revenge against the men who killed his puppy and stole his car.

During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz, Stahelski recalled John Wick's first test screening, which was rough. However, the director wasn't discouraged, and on opening night, Stahelski, Reeves, and co-director David Leitch snuck into a showing and were relieved by the much more positive audience reaction.

We had done our first test screening, friends and family kind of thing, and there wasn't a lot of applause. People were like, "Yeah... good job guys" and they scooted out, and we're like, "Oh yeah, we're done." It wasn't until we're like, "You know what, we're just gonna lean in." We had a come to God moment with Keanu and we're like, "We're not changing this. We're gonna own it. We're gonna do our headshots.

Despite the odds being stacked against it, John Wick instrumented an inventive marketing campaign that transformed its image from disposable action entertainment to a prestige event film led by a likable leading man. As a result, John Wick exceeded expectations and became a modest success by grossing $86 million at the box office. Critics also hailed John Wick as a comeback for Reeves, whose character perfectly aligned with his acting abilities.
