A Houston mother said she noticed there wasn't a crossing guard on the first day of school, so she reached out to KHOU 11.

A Houston mom reached out to KHOU 11 after what she saw on the first day of school. Here's what we found.

This issue came to light after a Houston mom contacted KHOU 11. She was concerned about a lack of crossing guards at her child’s elementary school during the first week of school. “Within the first few days, when we knew something was not right and something needed to be fixed," Courtney Rupp said."The text message communication started among parents. This is going to be a grassroots movement where we need to make noise."

That noise got the district’s attention. Now she says there is an adult at her kids’ crosswalk every day, even if it is a school administrator.A public information request revealed Houston ISD started this school year with 206 open crossing guard positions. To put that in perspective, there are 160 elementary schools in the district.

HISD says Cunningham Elementary School and Oates Elementary School had no crossing guards assigned at all in September.“We don’t want to wait until a tragedy occurs," shye said."We want to know what is being done before that. Let’s be proactive. Let’s keep our kids safe.""HISD crossing guards are a vital part of getting students to and from school safely. We are actively recruiting crossing guards for many of our campuses.
