Columnist Michael Taylor checks in with a San Antonio-based researcher about whether the goal of environmentally friendly flying is realistic.

As you can well imagine, I’m very busy so I prefer to travel by jet. But also, as you already know, I’m a very good person, so I want to be green while I fly. Currently, these are difficult goals to satisfy simultaneously. My goals-in-tension happen to align closely with an official government challenge to improve the sustainability of airline travel. The central organizing vision comes from a 2021 U.S.

An opportunistic Texas lithium-extraction strategy has me thinking The short answer in 2024: No. The batteries needed to lift anything except test planes are still too heavy. A point-to-point specialized all-electric flight happened in 2022, but it’s early days still. We may see hybrid flight first, analogous to hybrid automobiles, before we see jet flights powered only by fuel cells, at least for something that’s more than just a trial. We’re a ways off on this one.

Like it or not, Texas is at the forefront of U.S. energy transition. My proof? Batteries. “We are trying to decarbonize the aviation industry, not break the consumer’s wallet,” says Hoekstra. In other words, engineers in the industry can make eFuel in a lab, but they can’t make it affordably yet. From another angle, the chemical engineering industry already knows how to do step two — separate hydrogen from water — using natural gas as a primary energy source.

Is solar finally the energy source of the present in Texas? Like ethanol, however, these biofuels aren’t ready to wholly replace fossil fuel-derived jet fuel. At this point, they are used to blend with regular jet fuel. Also, Hoekstra says, at this point even the best biofuels are still two to three times more expensive to produce than jet fuel, so airlines are not about to make large-scale shifts in their blend.
