Many New York City residents decamped to greener pastures when the pandemic hit. Some are reveling in their new digs, but others can’t wait to return.
Christina Ray Stanton always considered herself a die-hard New Yorker. The 51-year-old lived in Manhattan for 27 years and worked as a tour guide, proudly showing her beloved city to visitors from around the world. She had no plans to leave.
But the pandemic changed all that. She and her husband are now living in the three-story townhouse they bought in September in her hometown of Tallahassee, Fla. “It’s on the main street, with restaurants. We’re almost trying to recreate our Manhattan experience,” Mrs. Stanton says. People have always left New York City—typically in a carefully planned move prompted by a retirement or growing family. But last year saw the sudden exodus of many like Mrs. Stanton who never expected to go.
