Darth Vader had two tasks in Revenge of the Sith. He successfully annihilated the Separatist leaders, but he failed to properly end the droid army.

One of Darth Vader's first missions in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith saw him head to Mustafar to end the threat of the Separatists, but he failed in this mission. Palpatine’s grand scheme for transforming the Republic into an Empire needed to be executed carefully, and it was crucial for each event to occur in order. First, before they realized something was amiss, the Jedi were wiped out through Order 66.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Separatists only existed to keep the Jedi occupied while Palpatine continued to gain power, and their leaders unknowingly served their purpose to the end. Palpatine promised them peace, but couldn’t risk keeping them around as a potential threat. Instead, Vader destroyed them and the Separatist droid army as well.

Several organizations ended up reactivating and repurposing the downed battle droids with ease. While societies such as Plazir-15 reactivated battle droids to perform menial labor to better their planet, on Desix former Separatists reactivated them and used them against the Empire. The Bedlam Raiders from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor were a notorious gang who reactivated hundreds of Separatist battle droids to create their own personal army.

Why Wasn't Darth Vader's Mission Completed? It's likely Palpatine intended to follow up on Darth Vader's shutdown of the droid army, but became distracted when Vader fell in battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi - forcing the Emperor to devote a substantial amount of time to saving his new apprentice's life. Had Obi-Wan not left Vader charred and maimed, Vader would have likely carried out the rest of his mission by methodically seizing any and all deactivated battle droids.
