The changes are taking place at four different toll plaza interchanges: Toledo Airport-Swanton/S.R. 2; Stony Ridge – Toledo/S.R. 420 and I-280; North Ridgeville – Cleveland/I-480; and Cleveland/S.R. 21 and I-77.

The newly constructed mainline Toll Plaza at milepost 49 in Swanton, Ohio, was the first of four new or reconstructed mainline toll plazas necessary for the implementation of the new Toll Collection System and E-ZPass open road tolling.BEREA, Ohio – The Ohio Turnpike is working to remove gates at toll plaza interchanges to allow E-ZPass customers to travel through toll lanes without stopping.

“We are currently undertaking the largest construction project in the history of the Ohio Turnpike since the years leading up to its completion in 1955,” Ferzan Ahmed, executive director of the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, said in a statement. “The modernization of the Turnpike will enable E-ZPass open road tolling and gateless low-speed conventional lanes to enhance the driving experience for our passenger car and commercial truck customers.

The entry gates in the converted lanes will benefit E-ZPass customers because they will not have to come to a stop and wait any more. Customers who do not own an E-ZPass will still have the option to pay for their ticket using cash or a credit card. Turnpike officials urge drivers to pay attention to the message signs above gantries to ensure they enter the correct lanes. The lanes will still display the same signs as before to direct customers to the right lane. The lanes will read, “TICKETS/E-ZPASS,” as well as “E-ZPASS ONLY” or “TICKETS ONLY.”
