A heat wave called Cerberus, named after a mythological multiheaded dog-monster, has parts of Europe in its jaws this week.Although the practice isn’t widespread yet, the proMETEO Sevilla Project based in Seville, Spain — in collaboration with a Washington-based nonprofit called the Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center of the Atlantic Council — started naming heat waves last summer.

Last year, a Seville heat wave became the first extreme heat event to be given a name — Zoe — as temperatures in the area hit 112 degrees Fahrenheit. Seville was the first city to test this system, and Athens, Greece, is piloting a similar program with the project. In Greek mythology, Cerberus was the hound of Hades, who was the god of the dead and king of the underworld. The underworld itself was also sometimes called Hades, and its gates were guarded by Cerberus, a dog often depicted having two or three heads. Some people liken this underworld to a hellscape, and even though the Greek Hades and the Christian hell are not the same thing, the phrase “hot as Hades” has become a colloquialism for saying something is extremely hot.
