Santa Maria police arrested a suspect found with a loaded, unserialized 9mm handgun during an investigation into public drinking. The firearm was discovered concealed near Grogan Park, and one individual has admitted ownership.
Santa Maria police officers successfully apprehended a suspect Friday night following an incident involving an illegally possessed, unserialized firearm , commonly referred to as a ghost gun .
The arrest unfolded shortly after 11:00 PM when officers from the Gang Suppression Team responded to reports of public alcohol consumption in the vicinity of Grogan Park. Upon arrival at the intersection of Rancho Verde and Woodlawn Drive, officers encountered a group of approximately ten individuals. Initial observations confirmed the presence of open containers of alcohol and clear indications of public drinking, leading to the temporary detention of all those present.
This detention was carried out without any resistance or incident, allowing officers to proceed with a thorough investigation of the surrounding area. During a systematic search of the immediate vicinity, officers discovered a handgun concealed beneath a fence. Subsequent examination identified the weapon as a Glock-style 9mm pistol lacking a serial number – a defining characteristic of ghost guns. The firearm was also found to be loaded with a 17-round magazine, significantly increasing its potential for harm.
The absence of a serial number makes tracing the firearm’s origin and previous ownership exceedingly difficult, posing a substantial challenge to law enforcement efforts to combat illegal gun trafficking and related crimes. Ghost guns are particularly concerning because they can be assembled from readily available parts, often purchased legally, and require no background checks or registration. This ease of access allows individuals prohibited from owning firearms, such as convicted felons, to acquire them easily.
The discovery of this weapon underscores the growing prevalence of ghost guns and the associated risks to public safety. The investigation quickly focused on identifying the firearm’s owner. After questioning the individuals detained, one suspect ultimately admitted to possessing the weapon. This individual was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.
The suspect now faces potential charges related to the illegal possession of an unserialized firearm, possession of a loaded firearm in public, and potentially other related offenses. The Santa Maria Police Department emphasized the importance of community vigilance in reporting suspicious activity and the department’s commitment to proactively addressing gun violence. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts required to keep the community safe from illegal firearms and the individuals who possess them.
The department continues to work diligently to identify and disrupt the flow of illegal weapons into the city, collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies to address this critical issue. The successful apprehension in this case highlights the effectiveness of the Gang Suppression Team and their dedication to maintaining public safety. The department’s proactive approach to investigating reports of public disturbances also played a crucial role in uncovering the concealed firearm and preventing potential harm
