“The monochrome cleanliness is long gone in favour of unabashed expression,” says interior designer Emily Bell. “Personality is becoming more and more prevalent. There’s something about this kind of unleashed creative freedom that feels necessary right now; a release, perhaps. And something joyful. This year, the Christmas tree, just like our homes during lockdown, is a symbol of us.
Stylist Kirthanaa Naidu, whose eye-catching table displays have helped her reach over 28,000 followers on Instagram, says that while the kitsch isn’t quite to her tastes, she’s a fan of this individualism. But the fact that so many of these decorations look like recognisable brands also suggests a kind of sly marketing to a younger audience whose identity might be more wrapped up in brands they align themselves with or consume. That stand mixer decoration? It’s actually a generic design, but you immediately think of Kitchenaid. So, too, do the titanium-plated cases make you think of the luxury brand Rimowa, whose full-size cases cost around £1,000.
