Possible challengers from the left of the party who kept their seats include security minister Tom Tugendhat, who held on in Tonbridge, and Health Secretary Victoria Atkins, who kept her Louth and Horncastle seat. James Cleverly, who has previously shied away from any leadership rumours, may also be put forward by colleagues on the left to see off a right-wing takeover.Among the likely frontrunners for the top job in the Tories, Ms Badenoch has support among the membership with her straight-talking approach to the media. But her habit of going on the attack from the off has drawn criticism from colleagues in the parliamentary party.
Speaking today after retaining her Fareham and Waterlooville seat, Ms Braverman signalled her intention to run, saying: “I’m sorry my party didn’t listen to you. The Conservative Party has let you down. We did not keep our promises. We’ve acted as if we’re entitled to your vote. We need to learn our lesson. I will do everything in my power to rebuild trust.
