Spotify unveiled its Global Song of the Summer on Wednesday, with the Peso Pluma and Elsabon Armado tune Ella Baila Sola earning the top honor.
Although the list was developed from streaming data, it can't claim to be a definitive ranking of popular tunes during the summer month, as it was only compiled from Spotify streams and doesn't take into account streaming data on other services, and it also ignores digital and physical music purchases, as well as radio play.
The publication noted that the collaboration between Peso Pluma and Eslabon Armado — comprised of vocalist Pedro Tovar, bassist Brian Tovar, 12-string guitarist Damian Pacheco and acoustic guitarist Ulises González — made history as the first regional Mexican song to soar into the top 10 for Billboard's all-genre songs chart.
'Música Mexicana, in general, offers a rich cultural tapestry that touches upon tradition, emotion, and modernity, making it relatable and exciting for Latin music listeners and non-Spanish speakers alike,' he explained. 'The strong appeal of this song reflects the power of Música Mexicana, proving that its moment in the sun is more than a trend.'
In a tweet from August 17, he attributed the alleged shift in priorities to hip hop artists making repetitive and derivative music in hopes of going viral on social media. 'Rappers better stop being boring and talking about the same s*** over and over, chasing TikTok success and comment sections,' he tweeted.
