A campaign group was started earlier this year to stop Openreach installing telegraph poles in Southport
Dozens of protesters occupied the steps of Southport Town Hall this morning to send a defiant message to Openreach bosses. Their campaign is centred around Openreach's plans to install telegraph poles around Southport which will carry FTTP and link properties to their Ultrafast Fibre optic broadband network.
This is because the installation of these poles is covered by permitted development rights - a statutory instrument included in the Town and Country Planning Order 2015. It means planning permission for certain types of development can be granted without requiring approval from the local planning authority or any consultation with residents. The LDRS understands Openreach have attended a Southport Operational Group meeting at the Town Hall this morning.
