Retired Dumfries and Galloway Chief Constable George Esson CBE passed away in July 2022 after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.
The widow of a hero Scots cop who led the Lockerbie bombing investigation has backed a leukaemia awareness campaign after his tragic death. Retired Dumfries and Galloway Chief Constable George Esson CBE passed away in July 2022 after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia - a type of blood cancer which progresses quickly.
But when George fell ill with a chest infection in May 2021, he was referred to the haematology department at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. “He just said - it is what it is, and I’ve got to get on with it. He never complained. He just kept a notebook that he filled out every day with details of his treatment – an old police habit."
“But it then came back that he did have leukaemia. He asked his doctor if we were talking time here and he said yes - weeks.” Thanks to the trial drug, George and Rita had been able to enjoy an extra year together following his original diagnosis. New research has revealed that 46 percent of Scots cannot identify any of the four most common symptoms of the disease – fatigue, bruising, unusual bleeding and repeated infections.
