'On one day I might be able to meet a friend or go to a hospital appointment, the next day I would be bed bound'
A Lisburn man living with ME has opened up about his own diagnosis 13 years ago as he urges people in Northern Ireland to take part in a new study into the condition.
Scientists from the University of Edinburgh are leading the DecodeME study to reveal the differences in a person’s DNA that can increase their risk of developing ME/CFS, aiding future research into its cause and the potential development of treatments. "Weeks went by and that didn't happen and I had been to the GP who thought it could be a number of things. I got in touch with the university who gave me extensions for coursework and extra time for exams.
"While I could list a whole bunch more such as poor memory and concentration, muscle pain etc, the main symptom of ME is that any stress or exertion can make your symptoms worse. "It would also help to prove that it's a physical illness with a biological cause and dispel the myth that ME is all in your head and that if you just think it better and sleep better you can fix yourself."
