A number of inmates have been released early from HMP Wandsworth on Labour's new scheme. One ex-prisoner was greeted by friends and family and a bottle of champagne.

Magistrates could be given the power to jail criminals for a year - double the current limit - under plans being considered by ministers to tackle prison overcrowding.

Out of these, around a third would generally be found not guilty or, if they were convicted, not sent to prison. And they believe the move could ultimately reduce the amount of prisoners being held on remand and free up jail cells because many remand inmates would be set free after being tried. Some 86,333 prisoners were behind bars in England and Wales on Friday, according to the Ministry of Justice - down 2,188 on the 88,521 at the end of last week.

Last week the Mail revealed how a prisoner has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman just an hour after being let out of jail. One convicted drug dealer said the policy had made him a 'lifelong Labour voter', while another insisted that he was a 'good boy now' after walking out to reunite with his family.
