Ex-PM may be gone, but she’s not forgotten among activists – or the public
Former Prime Minister Liz Truss speaks at the ‘Great British Growth Rally’ event on day two of the annual Conservative Party conference to the loud applause on her arrival, Liz Truss was in her element as she addressed a packed fringe meeting at the Tory party conference.
Just as Boris Johnson used to attract huge crowds to his Tory fringe events in the David Cameron era, the media scrum and the sheer length of the queue for Truss that snaked through the Manchester Midland Hotel proved that rebel songs are often the most seductive, Her attacks on the lack of housing in the UK were yet another indictment on the Government in which she served for 12 years. Her call for fracking bans to be lifted still failed to acknowledge it would be a pin-prick in our energy demands. And her renewed call for corporation tax cuts seemed as unfunded as it was when that very policy was among those that led to market meltdown.
For Sunak, Truss certainly is the troublesome ghost of Tory leaders past. There’s an old joke that while doctors can bury their mistakes, architects can’t. The same is true of living former prime ministers. Decades from now, Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, Theresa May and David Cameron will all still turn up to the Cenotaph every Remembrance Sunday – and the polls suggest many will remember and recoil at their tenure.
