With a huge 20 per cent swing, and a vote share nearly as high as when Labour won the constituency in 2010, the University of Strathclyde academic said that opposition parties that won on this scale were historically “on course for victory in a general election”. Many of Starmer’s most trusted inner circle are from or live in Scotland, with key shadow Cabinet ally Pat McFadden and campaigns director Morgan McSweeney central to his worldview.

In 2015, 2017, and 2019 “people would laugh at us on the doorstep when we said we could form a government”, another said. “They’re not laughing now. They’re listening.
“Over the past 10 years, the Tories have used English nationalism to fuel Scottish nationalism and vice versa,” says one of those closely involved in the by-election.“That was Cameron’s original sin, importing this populist right politics into his party and it led to Brexit.”
