A four-part Netflix documentary series features Soering in a reexamination of the 1985 murder of Derek and Nancy Haysom
Jens Soering was charged with the murder of his girlfriend’s parents, Derek and Nancy Haysom, in 1985.
The 1985 case centres on the murder of Derek and Nancy Haysom in Boonsboro, Virginia, whose mutilated bodies were found by police on 3 April 1985. They lived under assumed names but were arrested on 30 April 1986 for fraud after writing fake cheques, using false papers, and lying to the police in London.Under questioning, Soering confessed to the double murder several times to several authorities.
Soering was extradited to the United States on 12 January 1990 and was tried for two counts of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences, serving his time at the Buckingham Correctional Center in Dillwyn, Virginia. Soering alleged irregularities in the investigation leading to his arrest and in his trial and filed a number of legal appeals and post-conviction petitions.
She and Soering were granted parole on 25 November 2019. Haysom served 32 years of a 90-year prison sentence at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women in Troy, Virginia. She had been diagnosed as having borderline personality disorder by several court psychiatrists.
